Theoretical orientation
Psychodynamic: Adlerian Therapy
I am an Adlerian therapist, as I relate strongly to the critical importance of childhood and social relationships, and that we are influenced by both conscious and sub-conscious factors. Adlerian therapy, also called Individual Psychology, is a psychodynamic approach that espouses the following tenets:
Phenomenological - we construct our own reality
Goals - human behavior is goal-oriented
Deterministic - individuals are able to make choices
Socially-oriented - people are naturally motivated by social relationships when not hindered by feelings of inferiority
I also employ a Relational-Cultural/Feminist approach which considers the influence of gender identity, culture, sexual orientation, power, privilege and oppression in society. I strive to help clients gain relief from great distress by better understanding societal dynamics and finding ways to live in congruence with one's beliefs.
I will utilize also other theoretical frameworks/philosophies that appear to better address one's needs. These include narrative, existential, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, and post-modern strategies and techniques. A final point - as much as I find counseling theory helpful in conceptualizing a client's presenting concerns, the greatest skill I can offer is to be the very best listener to each person.
Meditative approach
As a yoga practitioner and instructor, I can assist clients by offering customized relaxation exercises to quiet one's mind. This can be especially beneficial for those experiencing difficulty sleeping, panic attacks, and anxiety.
